Mercitalia Rail launches new Livorno-Padua connecting service

The service will connect two weekly services between Livorno and Padua.

Mercitalia Rail, together with its subsidiary belonging to the Italian State Railways Group, will launch the new intermodal service connecting the 'Amerigo Vespucci' freight village in Guasticce, Livorno, with the freight village of Padua in Veneto. The new intermodal service is starting on Wednesday 8 May 2024.

The new service aims to facilitate the mobility of goods by rail and, above all, to revitalize the railway infrastructure and connections between the north and south of Italy. Rail transport has a lower environmental impact than road transport: around 100 lorries a week will be taken off the roads, with energy savings of around 77%.

A Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed to create a new rail link between the two freight centers of Tuscany and Veneto. The signatories are Mercitalia Rail and Logtainer. As planned, the agreement will lead to new traction services and the construction of new national and international terminals.

The rail service between the Livorno and Padua interports will run twice a week and will be particularly suitable for customers such as Trans Italia, which is planning to “switch from road to rail”. By linking the ports of Tuscany and Veneto, rail operators will also be able to benefit from the advantages of interconnecting networks and thus improve the efficiency of their logistics chain.
