New rail link to connect Italy with Hungary and Romania by the end of 2024

The new route will enable two weekly trips, supporting the flow of goods between Eastern and Western Europe.

Contship Group will launch an intermodal rail freight service connecting Italy, Hungary and Romania by the end of 2024. This new route will enhance the integrated European network, connecting Eastern and Western Europe and facilitating the flow of goods across these regions.

The service will operate between Contship Group's rail hub in Melzo, Italy, and the BILK and Arad terminals in Budapest, Hungary, and Curtici, Romania. The service is designed to accommodate a variety of cargo units, including semi-trailers, sea containers, and swap bodies, and aims to provide a flexible and efficient transport solution. It will offer two weekly rotations, each capable of carrying up to 35 freight units, with a transit time of 48 hours over a distance of more than 1,500 kilometers.

The operation of this new service will be a joint venture, with Eurogate Intermodal managing the Hungarian and Romanian sections and Oceanogate the Italian section. This strategic route is expected to significantly benefit traffic from Turkey and strengthen Curtici's position as a major freight hub linking Romania and Turkey with Italy.

Andrea Spagnuolo, Contship's Sales & Business Development Manager, highlighted the strategic importance of this route in strengthening the intermodal transport network within Europe. This mode of transport offers efficiency and sustainability over medium to long distances and ensures optimal integration between different types of cargo units, making it an increasingly popular choice among freight forwarders.
