Over the past week, several new connections were announced. In Europe, new routes started within France, in Montenegro, and a connection of Germany / Denmark to Italy / France. China launched its first trains heading for France, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan and received a “durian train” from Thailand.

On April 26, 2023, Captrain France and Lahaye Global Logistics inaugurated a new intermodal rail connection. This collaboration enables the transportation of intermodal units between the Rennes Terminal and Ports de Lille, utilising 100% electric traction by Captrain France. With three weekly rotations, this rail link represents a significant investment by Lahaye Global Logistics and their subsidiary Rennes Terminal in promoting modal complementarity and carbon-free transport projects.

On April 28, Kombinovani Prevoz, a Serbian rail freight operator, successfully conducted the first test run of locomotives in Montenegro after acquiring the necessary license. This milestone enables Kombinovani Prevoz to establish crucial rail connections between the Port of Bar, Nikšić, and the market in Albania with Serbia. Furthermore, these connections will facilitate transit through Serbia to other parts of Europe, boosting trade and transportation opportunities in the region.

SAMSKIP EXPANDS DUISBURG RAIL SERVICES WITH 4 NORTH-SOUTH ROUTES

Samskip, a leading European multimodal and logistics group, has expanded its rail services at the Duisburg terminal by introducing four new routes. These routes cater to importers and exporters in Denmark, France, and Italy. The services connect the Samskip Terminal Duisburg to Padborg (Denmark), Macon (France), Padua, and Verona (Italy), significantly increasing capacity and providing enhanced rail links into Italy. Samskip's Duisburg terminal already serves as a pivotal hub for north-south rail services between Germany, Sweden, and Italy, as well as connections to Denmark, Lubeck, Poland, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam.

Launched on April 26, the first "French Postal Express" China-Europe freight train departed on its journey from Chengdu International Railway Port in Sichuan. This freight train for Direct Parcel Distribution (part of French La Poste), carries small household appliances, electronic products, and customised clothing for cross-border e-commerce. With plans for regular operations at a frequency of at least two trips per month, this initiative demonstrates La Poste's expansion into the Chinese market. It aims to improve the international business service level.

NANCHANG ESTABLISHED THE FIRST CONTAINERIZED FREIGHT TRAIN TO ALMATY

The city of Nanchang in Jiangxi Province, China, has initiated its inaugural containerised freight train service to Almaty, Kazakhstan. The 12-day train journey commenced with 55 loaded containers, transporting auto parts, ceramic and porcelain dinnerware, and electrical appliances.

China's Hebei province has established a new rail freight intermodal connection with Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. This rail link, spanning a distance of 6,000 kilometres, connects the city of Langfang through the Hirgos Pass in Xinjiang and Kazakhstan, completing the journey in 15 days. The first train, weighing 1,400 tonnes, transported cotton goods and furniture. 

A NEW RAIL LINK CONNECTS THAILAND AND CHINA FOR DURIAN TRANSPORTATION

Thailand and China have established a new train service specifically dedicated to transporting durian and mangosteen. The inaugural journey of this specialised "Durian Train" involved 23 containers filled with these tropical fruits, travelling from Laem Chabang port in Thailand to Kunming in southwest China in just three days. This route utilised the Laos-China railway, providing a direct connection for the durian trade. Thailand, a major durian producer, exports 96% of its harvest to China. Notably, the Laos-China railway saw a significant increase in transportation volume, with around 500 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in 2019, surpassing 2,000 TEUs in 2022. This year, the volume is projected to exceed 3,000 TEUs, further cementing the importance of this rail link for the durian industry between Thailand and China.
