Renfe Mercancías will allocate €122.7 million to support its project to decarbonize, digitalize and improve the rail freight transport system in Spain. The investment aims to promote technological progress in freight transport to make it more sustainable and competitive with other sectors. Concrete projects will be awarded by the end of the first half of this year and must be completed by 31 December 2025.
Of the total investment, €37.3 million (30% of the total amount) comes from the Support Programme for Sustainable and Digital Transport of MITMA (Secretary of State for Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda), within the framework of the Plan Recovery, Transformation and Resilience (PRTR), funded by the European Union NextGenerationEU.
The government's funding programme is in line with the support for sustainable and digital transport, which aims to raise the importance of rail as the least polluting mode of transport for passengers and freight. To this purpose, the company is investing in the integration of new locomotives into the Renfe Mercancías fleet in order to optimize new infrastructures from the moment they are put into service, as is the case with the Pajares Tunnel.
Within the planned investment Renfe Mercancías plans to acquire platforms and wagons for freight transport on railway highways, as well as high power fully electric locomotives powered by 100% renewable energy. The money will also be used to install systems to reduce noise in wagons, the ERTMS safety system in locomotives, and new rolling stock identification and traceability solutions.
