As reported by the UK's Daily Mail, Pchelnikov had boasted about being 'the most experienced PR manager in Russian Railways company a few days ago was on vacation, from which he posted smiling photos with his family on social media. What would lead him to commit suicide remains a question.

The website Top Cargo 200, which tracks and publishes the deaths of senior Russian officers in the war in Ukraine, said Pechelnikov was killed by gunfire. According to the report, Russian officials accused him of failing to protect the infrastructure of Russia's rail network from hackers located in Ukraine, leading to delays in delivering critical supplies to Russian forces.
