As part of the €228 million contract, a 44 km-long section of railway between the Croatian capital Zagreb and the port of Rijeka will be modernized.

Austrian construction giant Strabag, the European technology partner for building services, innovation leader, and financial strength, signed a contract for the modernization of the railway in Croatia at the end of July this year.

The contract includes, among other things, the upgrade of the existing track, the construction of a new track, and the modernization of several stations and stops. Level crossings along the line will also be replaced with overpasses and underpasses. After the completion of the modernization, trains will be able to run on the line at a speed of up to 160 kilometres per hour.

“The modernization of the railway line between Hrvatski Leskovac and Karlovac, which is situated along the Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network, will improve the transport links between the port of Rijeka and the markets in Hungary, Slovakia and Poland in the long term. We are delighted to be able to make a significant contribution to this undertaking,” said Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag SE.

The contract is for a total value of HRK 1,713 million (equivalent to € 228 million) and is co-financed mainly by the European Union Cohesion Fund.

Construction is due to be started in October 2022. With expected duration of 30 months, the work is scheduled for completion in May 2025.
